Joelton DOMINATES over White House Devils

What a nail biter today's game was against rivals White House. At this year's away game, the Vikings went in with a strong desire to win. It was back and forth with White House scoring first, then the Vikings, then White House, then the Vikings. Finally, the Vikings pulled ahead 28-14 in the 3rd quarter but White House came back with another touchdown, bringing the score 28-20. White House lost the ball on downs in the 4th, then Joelton fumbled the ball. With a minute to go in the game and the Devils in scoring position, White House player #37 threw a pass that was interceptioned by Joelton's Austin Poss. Final score in this game was 28-20 in favor of Joelton.

Way to go Vikings!!

Photos taken by Mr. Beck are located here.

It will take me longer to upload and edit mine so it will likely be tomorrow before they are up.

Remember that Coach Mike indicated the boys will have pizza after practice on Monday night. Our next opponent is South Cheatham at home next week. A reminder that we will have another bake sale next week. Plan to bring things for sale.

Just FYI, this puts the Vikings as #1 in the division (4-1 overall and 4-0 division) with games left against South Cheatham (1-4 overall and 1-3 division), Cheatham County (1-4 overall 1-3 division) and Portland West (3-2 overall and 3-1 division).

And, last but certainly not least, Happy Belated Birthday to Ms. Marley!!!

I-24 Exchange Lists Scores in PV v. Joelton Game

It was interesting to read this week in the I-24 exchange that Joelton fell last week to Pleasant View with a score of 27-6. There was even a photo (with Joelton player cropped out). I am hoping this is a mistake and have sent an email and photo to Lawrence Gunnels who handles the sports sections. Should you want to contact the paper yourself, click here and send a [nice] little note.

Vikings Soar Right Past Eagles to Victory

It is my understanding that with this game being somewhat of an "in-county" rivalry, there was much talk among the students attending Sycamore Middle School this week about the outcome of the game between the Vikings and the Eagles.

It was a much wanted victory on the part of both teams, but the Vikings came out victorious in this game, winning 27-6. The Eagles managed a touchdown in the last seconds of the game, preventing a total shut-out for their team. Unfortunately, the scoreboard didn't manage to reflect that last minute touchdown.
It was also Homecoming and the 12 year old football players and cheerleaders were recognized at half-time of the 9-10 year old team's game.
Megan Warren and Justin Wood were both recognized for cheering and playing for the Vikings for 7 years. Both of them are such remarkable young people and we have all been fortunate to share the last seven years of their lives as they grew from little kids to the young woman and young man that they are now.

Also recognized for their time with the Vikings football team were:
  • Donovan Taylor
  • Dylan Miller
  • Hank White
  • Chris Haycraft
  • Dallas Brooks
  • Hunter Bowman
Recognized for the cheerleaders was Tiffany Darrow.

We were so glad that Coach Hans did his game entering cartwheel. Last week he chose not to cartwheel into the game and we all know what happened at that game. When you see him, let's all encourage him to keep up the cartwheels at the beginning of the games so we will continue winning!!

I also wanted us to remember our announcer, Charlie Halverson (hopefully, I have that last name right), who shows up to each home game and provides play-by-play and wonderful entertainment for our teams. I am glad we have a photo of him to include so we can remember all he has done and continues to do for the Vikings!!

When you see Donovan's mom, Tricia Taylor, this week, please ask her why the slogan, "For You, Eagles" wasn't chosen to go on this week's entrance banner. I think you might enjoy her story.

And last, but certainly not least, Hunter Bowman's dad gets the award for "Team Spirit" this week as he colored his hair to show his team spirit!!

Next week, we face White House. It is an AWAY game. Directions will be posted here later in the week.

GO VIKINGS!!
Pictures from this week can be found here and here.

Bisons Trample Vikings

In the season's first loss and also the season's first home game, the Joelton Vikings succumbed to the Station Camp Bisons with a final score of 43-8 at the end of the third quarter.

The Vikings played a hard game, but the size of the Bison team was definitely a factor in the game as their line was significantly larger than our team's line. Both team's players and coaching staff showed excellent sportsmanship on and off the field.

The photos from today's game can be found here.
Brandon's photos from today can be found here.

Photo highlights of the game are below:

Vikings Scrimmage Cougars

At last night's practice, our boys scrimmaged the Goodpasture Cougars at our field. It was good experience for both teams and was a lot of fun for us parents as well. Taking the opportunity to get "up close and personal" on the field, of course, I took photos! (Is anyone surprised??) You can find the link to those photos here.

Preparations have begun on the park and field for the Vikings first home game of the 2009 season. Anyone who can help on Thursday night is MUCH NEEDED as there is still quite a bit of work to do. Please try to be there and ask someone what you can do to help as we open up the season hosting the Station Camp Bisons.

Some of my favorite pictures from last night are located below. If you don't see yourself here this week, check back all season, you are certain to show up here soon!!

I've got my eye on you!

"Two" cool

Who's under that pile??

Need a lift?

Run, Austin, run!

Look at that guy's face!!

"You're outta' here!"

"If you two could just grow to this height here, we would have something to work with!"

Easing him down to the ground -- on his head.

Here, let me help hold you up...

Drats, foiled again! [them, not us!]

A great play by Mickey!

Run, Donovan, run!

Saving the best for last?? Are they not so very sweet?

Vikings Wrangle Cowboys

The temperature wasn't the only thing hot on the football field yesterday as the Joelton Vikings faced off against home team Ashland City Cowboys. The Vikings were smoking as they took the win over the Cowboys at 36-0. The game was called with 1:33 left due to the score. Ironically, last year's score was 36-0 with the game called with 3:16 left in the game. Talk about deja vu.

Former Cowboys, Austin Poss, Jarrett Ray and Hank White were team captains along with Cody Risner as our honorary Captain for the day. Cody has been battling leukemia and it was such a blessing and honor to have him attend today and be our Captain.

Photos from today's game can be seen here. Thanks to the Colliers (Carla and/or Brock -- not sure which one, honestly) who took pictures during the second quarter as I had to leave early!!
Brandon Beck also took photos at this game and they can be viewed here! We are so fortunate to have so many parents who do so much for our team! As soon as I get stats from Steve Ray, I will also post them on the site.
Preparations will begin this week for the Vikings first home game against Station Camp Bisons. There is a link to the left for their website, but I don't think it is updated very frequently.
Kevin also wanted me to remind parents that if you want a DVD of the games, please provide him with blank DVDs and he will burn a copy for you each week. ADDITIONALLY, any parent who wants a copy of any of the games from last year's 9-10 team, including the SuperBowl game, please let him know before SEPTEMBER 19 as this will be when he takes them off his computer to free up space for this year's game.

Words from Coach Mike

Welcome to the 2009 11-12 year old Joelton Vikings. We, as the coaching staff, look forward to working with all of our players. We understand that to all of the parents, the most important child on the field is their own. And believe me when I say to this coaching staff, all our players are equally important and will be treated fairly.

We want to have fun this year. We hope all that made our swim party had a great time. We also want to teach the kids more about football teamwork and sportsmanship. Being an 11 or 12 year old boy is not an easy job. We want to and will win football games. We will try to do the best we can with the playing time the boys receive. There will be some games where their time will be divided out more than others, but at the end of the day, I promise you, I will go out of my way to get every player as much playing time as possible. This team is not about us coaches or about the parents, it is about those kids, and that is what they are, still kids. And, our main goal should be that they have fun. I think we have proven in the past they can have fun and still win games.

I want to thank all the parents for giving me the chance to work with your boys. And my five coaches are the best I have worked with in 20 years of doing this. I want to thank our great team mom, Carla and our sponsors for their support.

Feel free to talk to me about any concerns, but just not in the middle of the game, please. I look forward to another great year.

Thanks,
Coach Mike

PS -- Don't forget the camp-out on October 10.
